In Bengaluru, a notorious criminal known for robbing travelers on the Bengaluru-Tumakuru national highway was shot in the leg by the Dobbaspet police on Saturday. The injured individual, identified as 26-year-old Jayanath, also known as Battery Jayantha, hails from Alur village in Kanakapura taluk, Ramanagara district. In recent incidents, Jayanath and his accomplices attacked a truck driver with daggers while he was having dinner near Billanakote of Nelamangala taluk, resulting in injuries and theft of the driver's mobile phone and Rs 3,500. Jayanath also snatched an iPhone in Peenya, but was eventually tracked down by the victim and police using the Find My Mobile app, though he managed to escape on that occasion.
Acting on a tip, a police team led by inspector B Raju cornered Jayanath near Gittigerepalya Cross on the Dobbaspet-Ramanagara highway. When he attempted to flee and attacked constables with a dagger, inspector Raju fired at Jayanath's right leg in response. Jayanath was promptly brought to a nearby hospital and later transferred to Victoria Hospital for further treatment. Authorities report that Jayanath has been involved in 51 criminal cases including attempted murder, robbery, kidnapping, extortion, burglary, and vehicle theft, with his criminal activities traced back to when he was a minor.
Following a formal complaint filed by inspector Raju, a case of attempted murder under BNS Section 109 and the Arms Act has been registered against Jayanath.
